Picture book Operation Marriage by Cynthia Chin-Lee

KQED Features Book Based on FPC Palo Alto Members

In a story about a San Francisco collection of LGBTQ+ family stories on the KQED website, the picture book “Operation Marriage” by FPC Palo Alto member and children’s author Cynthia Chin-Lee is featured. “Operation Marriage” is based on the real-life FPC Palo Alto story about the Merkle-Raymond family’s decision to get married during the narrow window when same-sex marriage was made legal in 2008 before Proposition 8 passed. The picture book also features illustrator Lea Lyon’s illustrations with FPC Palo Alto kids and adults as models for the book. “Operation Marriage” was published by members Derrick Kikuchi and Craig Wiesner’s company Reach and Teach. A short film by film maker Quentin Lee was also produced.
